A year after the pandemic, vaccination continues in various parts of the world, and vaccine supply problems are emerging day by day. While many countries have problems in accessing and supplying vaccines, the countries that are in the worst situation are in Africa.
While the World Health Organization continues its intensive work on vaccine supply to poor countries within the scope of the World Health Organization’s Global Access to Covid Vaccines Program (COVAX), the recently published Covid-19 report and the spokesperson of the World Health Organization on COVAX Margaret Harris from NTV, Deniz Kilislioğlu answered the questions of.
Spokesperson Harris, who answered the question about the report published by the World Health Organization recently, said, “This virus may have been transmitted to us by several different animals, or even managed to infect pets,” said, “We also know the cases of Covid transmitted from mink to human or from human to mink. These animals and many different species can live with each other and in colonies. “It may have been seen in bats in general and interacted with another species that we do not know.”
‘IT LAYS ANSWERS ON THE QUESTION WHICH ANIMALS ARE SOLD’
Spokesperson Harris asked which animal was the specific culprit, “We know that specific bat species is miles away from Wuhan, where the first cases were seen in China. What our experts are looking at and will continue to look at is: What animals, live or dead, have been sold in different animal markets? The answers lie here ”.
‘EVERYONE WANTS MAGIC ANSWERS’
When asked whether another expert team would do research after the criticism about the report, Harris answered as follows:
“A segment of the press hoped to find magical answers in this report. Unfortunately, science doesn’t work that way. When you look at our research on many different epidemics and diseases, these studies can take years. Sometimes it can take thousands of years, as in the plague epidemic. We never expected that we would find magical answers. The World Health Organization conducted a very deep research here; but this is just the beginning. Deeper scientific research has to be done before we can understand how this disease is transmitted to humans. But we did not expect to get results immediately in this first report ”.
‘THE REPORT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT FUTURE PANDEMIES’
To the question about the progress made after the report, Harris used the following statements:
“An important report as it emphasizes our need to better manage the animal world and respect their realm. It is an important report in terms of understanding the risks that increase our intrusion into their field. An important report for us to be prepared for the future. There is a search around the world for an international pandemic deal. In order for us to do what needs to be done now to prevent future pandemics and to increase efforts. This report was important for all of these ”
‘550 MILLION DOSES ENTERED IN THE SYSTEM IN COVAX, 33 MILLION DOSES DISTRIBUTED’
When asked about COVAX, the organization where WHO provides vaccine aid to poor countries, Harris said, “So far, more than 550 million doses of vaccines have entered the system. In the COVAX program alone, 33 million doses were distributed to 70 participating countries. “We are still waiting for vaccination to start in a few countries.”
Stating that most of the countries waiting for vaccination are in the African continent, Harris stated that Biontech, Oxford and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are used in COVAX.
